Quoi faire à New York ?
Nouilles: Taipei noodle, a bit further than the 50th up on 2nd, less greasy. They also deliver, Tsing Tao beer is cheap. Beware, not all chinese food in the area is recommendable!
Pita Grill: For their sweet potato fries, for lunch. A lot of the other places around there are fine also, including the pizza place (best value for money, if the old Italian likes you, your even in for discounts!) if you are not afraid of NY look! The Thai in front of it is also ok, lots of Thai places are not good though.
Cajun: JONES, on Great Jones Street just off Bowery. It is in the NYU district. Very small, gets crowded, but my definite favorite. Look for the orange door.
Pub Food: The Swift pub in the same area is also good, if you like pub food and good music.
Korean: bbq restaurants in the 36th/6th avenue area (there's a GAP on the corner of the street) are worth-well trying, for spicy meats and the little dishes that go with the food. One on the 2nd floor, South side of the street, has lots of space. Sorry don't know the name!
Brunch must be had at the Elephant and Castle (no relation to Ottawa's) at least once. Other meals good there too. It's on Greenwich avenue. (my favorite with Jones).
Cafeteria is open 24 hours - it's at 11th ave and 17th i think??? Check the address before you go. In Chelsea (if you like visual arts, Chelsea has an open-studio week-end well worth dropping by. Advertised in this weekly magazine they sell - Look Out?)
Varia: Lots of good and interesting places on Bleecker st, interesting Italians in perpendicular streets (close to Banana Republic).
The Cowgirl Hall of Fame. Tex-Mex, in lower Greenwish (Hudson??). Picturesque, and totally non-UN!!
Brunch is also good on St.Mark's Place, which i believe is 8th street going East to Alphabet city. Crepes, cool places. Then, check out the independent theaters around for live plays - it's off-off Broadway and very interesting ( and cheap!),
French restaurant at 5th and ave A, called L'Ardoise i think.
Indian, try 10th (6th?)street at 1st/2nd. I am told the Gandhi is excellent.
Mainly veg and organic restaurant in Soho --- i will check out my notes on this and send you the address.
Vietnamese - try Cyclo on First ave, nice decor too!
Pour des listes plus exhaustives et plus detaillees, vous pouvez consulter:
Voici une liste pêle mêle d'endroits où vous pouvez boire un café, où mieux, déguster une pointe de gateau....
Old italian café on McDougall, NYU area close to Washington square - best homemade tiramisu and almond italian soda. It has a big old cappuccino machine as main ornament, it's small and cozy and crowded. One of my favorites too!!
Small's. It is a jam jazz club, off 7th i think. You will find it in the weekly newspaper that advertises shows and the like (name escapes me right now. Boy, it has been a while!! I barely went out last time i was there, ate at people's homes mostly and slept early!).
Fez under Times Café. Also in NYU area, corner of 4th and 2nd i think but might well be wrong. The Fez is litterally under the Times Café, ie you have to go in, to the back , and then down. They have interesting poetry nights i am told, and a very hip drag show. Reservations required for the latter.
First ave and 11th I think, you will find a place where they have great latin/acid jazz and other live bands in the downstairs area, and even Unibroue beers! It's called something like Indigo bar.
Avenue A Corner of 2nd street i think, there is a bar with no name, 2nd floor all windows. For a drink. Lots of cafés and other interesting spots.
"FIRST", at 87 First Avenue. The business card which i have in front of me says "Late Night Dining". They really mean it. It's packed on week-ends.
For week-days drinks (and sometimes week-ends!), we (UNGA 54's JAs), adopted THe Onion. It's on 2nd, corner of 52nd maybe? Address is 961 2nd ave says the card. Door is on the side (not on 2nd ave), bar is on 2nd floor.
Polly-Esther which has disco music which i desperately wanted to try, but didn't manage to. Open Wednesdays to Sundays i think only.
Il y a des sites Specialise pour ce faire, En voici un:
Toute ces choses fantastiques qui commencent par M !
Movies: There are few repertory theaters: Angelica at Houston street (crowded), one uptown by Julliard which has a good selection of European ones (it's by Columbus circle), and one on 13th street which does more in the alternative, and has cheaper seats. Commercial theaters often have late nigh showings - midnight movies are fun!
Museums: Lots!! I love the MOMA, and its design store accross the street. Fridays are PWYC, although apparently UN passes allow a discount at any time. Friday night is free jazz at the Gugghenheim. I also enjoyed the MET (PWYC always) and some smaller collections or art centers i visited.
Musicals: get coupons for cheaper week-end matinees from UN volunteers desk. CATS is boring for the first half.
Manhattan...is great, but it's fun to get out and check out Brooklyn and Long Island!
Metro: I wish i had taken the subway earlier on, although walking is fun too.
